This morning I was reading my Bible in 1 Kings and a story that I have read many times throughout my life, just jumped out at me. It’s amazing how God’s Word is alive in our lives during each season of our lives.
Let’s look at 1st Kings 19. Elijah is scared and flees to Horeb. He is the last of the prophets who are alive and is afraid that Ahab is about to kill him too. He had been threatened and so the Bible says that “he ran for his life” (19:3).
He gets to a certain place and he tells God that he is ready to die. An angel came and took care of him during these moments but then something happens. God speaks.
In verse 9, we see that God speaks the first time saying, “what are you doing here Elijah?” Elijah responds with his story about how He has been zealous for God and now he is the only one left of the prophets and they are trying to kill him.
But then God tells him to go stand on the mountain “in the presence of the Lord” (19:11).
He does and this time, an earthquake came, but the Lord wasn’t there. The fire came, but the Lord wasn’t there. And afterwards, there was a “gentle whisper”. And when Elijah heard that whisper, he pulled his cloak over his face and went and stood at the mouth of the cave.
It’s then, in that gentle whisper that God asks the same question: “What are you doing here, Elijah”?
I have always loved the idea of the gentle whisper of God, but today, it just hit me differently.
I feel like God asking Elijah through the fire/earthquake what was he doing there might have come across as angry, harsh, disappointed…
But a gentle whisper?
That’s kind. Gracious. Personal.
Like a father, who is wanting to make sure that His son is okay. Like a counselor, speaking to someone in grief.
A God who loves His servant.
Have you ever felt like you wanted to give up? Have you ever wanted to end your walk with God or your ministry or even, like Elijah, your life?
God isn’t speaking to you today in a fire or an earthquake. He is coming to you. Personally.
Listen to His gentle whisper.
